The balance wave

For people with PTSD, inward-focused meditation can be difficult, and therapists may lose contact between sessions. The Balance Wave proposes an open-eye rhythm game for everyday grounding, with adaptive biofeedback and remote monitoring for clinicians.

THE IDEA / The balance wave

The project addresses two critical gaps in trauma care: the risk of passive meditation apps triggering PTSD flashbacks (due to closed-eye internal focus), and the clinical "blind spot" where therapists lose track of avoidant patients between sessions until it's too late.

The Balance Wave is designed for discrete, everyday use, masking a clinical down-regulation tool as an engaging rhythm game. For the patient, it provides an active, open-eye intervention during daily routines. For the clinician, it serves as a vital remote monitoring tool, collecting continuous gameplay and physiological data to trigger alerts in edge cases—identifying patients who are avoiding treatment before their condition deteriorates.

At its core, the system operates as a Closed-Loop Biofeedback mechanism based on bilateral stimulation. Any shift or stabilization in kinematic metrics (via the mobile gyroscope and touch interactions) instantly translates into real-time adjustments of cognitive load and sensory stimulation. By dynamically balancing task demands, the game keeps the patient anchored in the present moment, effectively regulating anxiety without ever causing sensory overload or boredom.

While initially designed as a critical intervention for PTSD, this active down-regulation method is highly effective for everyday stress and panic management, significantly expanding the product's Total Addressable Market (TAM) into the broader B2C wellness sector.
