Phantom Fish

An amputated limb can still hurt. Catch flying fish on a virtual beach while the game switches between real and mirrored hands, turning phantom-limb movement practice into play.

THE IDEA / I left my arm at home...

Mirror-based practice gives a person with an amputation visual feedback of the missing limb moving. Repeating a small set of exercises can limit the experience.

Phantom Fish gives each movement a job: catch the fish. A seagull switches the active hand, and the game responds as the player crosses the body’s center line. The game explores motor imagery and mirrored feedback; a clinical pain benefit has not been demonstrated in the collected material.
